SUPERFRONT and Figment in celebrated the third annual Public Summer installation Library of Immediacy on Governors Island, Saturday, July 21 from 2-5 pm. The Library of Immediacy was designed and constructed by the architectural duo, saA, who are Amy Chang and Seo Young Shin. The opening included a performance by artist Devin Kenny, live Music by Alex Berne, and Sonnet Boom! with Ama Birch.
Located on the Parade Grounds on Governors Island, The Library of Immediacy hosted an ongoing, community-curated installation by The People’s Library and artist collective, DADDY, on weekends from July 21st-September 23rd. Visitors are welcome to donate and exchange reading materials at this new satellite of the People’s Library. In addition, concurrent with The Library of Immediacy, DADDY presents #LOANER, a democratically curated, anecdotal, and didactic display of objects. Viewers were asked to present and create wall text for personal items; objects may be loaned if replaced with a similar object for display. The collection was subsequently archived through social media and an oversized log book. Through this mediated accumulation, an index emerges that supersedes the importance of the individual.
In addition, SUPERFRONT, along with The People’s Library, DADDY, and Bed-Stuy-based arts group, FOKUS, invited participants to take part in events and workshops every weekend for the duration of the summer.
FICTIONAL FIGURES situates a collection of objects in the landscape, a family of forms at once similar and singular. The figures become the columns, tables and chairs for the library, arranging themselves in ways that create multiple scales of space, from the intimate (a nook to read) to the communal (a reading room). Using a simple tectonic and set of manipulations, the project investigates the line between repetition and variation (considering material efficiencies, budget, limits of construction on one hand, playfulness on the other). At the same time, the project plays a game of hide and seek in the landscape, using texture, material, form and color to blur distinctions between figure and field.
The charrette took place on Governors Island in historic Pershing Hall, where over 50 designers had only two hours to compete. PUBLIC SUMMER: Library of Immediacy will be a semi-outdoor space to support a curated set of public activities on Governors Island by The People’s Library and DADDY. Please stay tuned for summer programming announcements.
Jurors included: David Benjamin (The Living), Lauren Crahan (Freecell), Scott Hughes (Robert Silman Associates), Rocket Osborne (Figment), Cassim Shepard (Urban Omnibus), and Mabel Wilson (Columbia GSAPP).
About the designers:
saA is Amy Chang and Seo Young Shin. They met in graduate school at the Yale School of Architecture (M.Arch I class of 2011) where they discovered a shared love of drawing. Through drawing they have explored themes of the real and unreal, reimagined the ordinary, articulated architectural space, and recorded adventures abroad. They are interested in finding intersections between architecture, art, music and landscape. Amy is originally from the Bay Area and works at Davies Tang & Toews in Brooklyn. Seo Young is from Seoul, South Korea and works at SOM, New York.
