SUPERFRONT Public Summer 2012 will explore the future and function of the public library in the urban terrain. How can our libraries be re-imagined to best create a public mecca for its residents? We will create a meeting place and a site for action for the exchange of ideas. The goal is to examine the possibilities of temporary structure, visible and invisible, and to seek social solutions in new and unexpected ways during a protracted economic downturn. How might one operate not only in uncertain times but as a matter of principle?
We are accepting proposals from local non-profits, community groups, individual artists, arts programs, artist collectives, and other civic-minded groups to work within this context. The 1,000 sq ft temporary space will be constructed on Governors Island in partnership with FIGMENT by a group of emerging architects.
The SUPERFRONT Public Summer space will be free and open to the public from approximately July 14 through September 23rd from 10am-6pm on Saturdays and Sundays only. Please note that all programs, before being confirmed, will be cleared with FIGMENT and the Trust for Governors Island.
