PUBLIC SUMMER wrap-up: closing event canceled due to hurricane

Category : Announcement, Brooklyn, Event, Public Summer 2011 Aug 26th, 2011

It has been a rainy but excellent Public Summer 2011 at Industry City. Due to the oncoming hurricane Irene, the final closing event this weekend is canceled. There will be no postponement.

In lieu of a closing event, please find this summary below!

Starting with the open charrette June 11, a stellar jury including Vito Acconci (Acconci Studio), K8 Hardy, Mitchell Joachim (TerraForm), Olympia Kazi (Van Alen), and Ada Tolla (LOT-EK) selected the winning design by CO.

Public summer opened with CO’s installation July 17th with music by DJ Stylus.

Following a number of Sunday rainstorms, both real and forecasted, Gia Wolff and a team of resident designers at Industry City produced Portaali, a 2nd Public Summer installation that opened with the PERFORMANCY FORUM XV on August 21.

The closing event this weekend was slated to feature Kaloyan Ivanov performing “I Will Not Remember You When I Am Dead,” Eliza Fernand enacting Quilt Stories, an interactive installation, and Shinkoyo presenting: SOUNDCORRIDORS.

SUPERFRONT’s Public Summer program is enabled by generous donations from Thomas Calamari, Margit Detweiler, Mark Gardner, Rodney Gardner, Brian Towles, and the SUPERFRONT Board of Directors, as well as funding from the Brooklyn Arts Council, materials from Materials for the Arts, and support from Industry City.

SUPERFRONT thanks everyone who has made this year’s Public Summer possible – all charrette participants, construction volunteers, artists, performers, designers, donors, interns, attenders, DJ, and sponsors. THANK YOU.
